Gary earned his wings at sixteen when he abandoned the main fight and took credit for killing Professor Vibrations, one of The Monarch's nemeses. Members of The Fluttering Horde go through an initiation ritual called "earning your wings" before promotion to full henchmen. An enraged Monarch ordered they kill Gary but the latter joined their ranks instead. The henchmen had mistaken the larger-than-average Gary for their intended kidnapping victim, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, believing the biggest person must be the most important. He was kidnapped by The Monarch's henchmen at the age of 15, during an eighth grade field trip to Washington, D.C. Gary Fischer was originally a stereotypical nerd who enjoyed comic books and fantasy/scifi genres until he joined The Monarch and The Fluttering Horde. As confirmed by his fellow henchmen, he is actually Henchman 1 as of Season 4, due to becoming a competent fighter.
